There is a yelling lunatic fringe, but just as damaging and less criticized is what i would call the "snark fringe" (the type of person who would point out I didn't capitalize "I" above), who try to use passive aggression as a primary discussion tactic. I know I've been guilty of that before, it's easier to mock someone (even better, a faceless group of people) or say something ironic than it is to try understanding someone else and using facts as the weapon, but it's something I see happening all the time and hurting chances for good discussion.

I think the answer is different at different levels of government, and at the federal level it's important to remember that whatever power is given will be used, even by the executive branch of a later president that may not hold to the same intentions as the one who proposed the law. I think we got away with extra restrictions during the ww2 time because we were a more unified and homogenous society. Seeing how divided we are now should in my opinion give everyone pause about moving more to the restrictive end of the continuum on bill of rights issues. Someone in the "few" may soon become a member of the "many", and vice versa.
Erik Sautter commented on Josh Scholl's post.
I think it depends on what type of freedom and/or guarantee of well-being is up for discussion. There's a bit of a continuum there too. For instance, patents are meant as a type of guarantee of well-being and protection by government, but they probably wouldn't override many 1st amendment concerns. With respect to protection of life there is the "clear and present danger" standard that's been defined, so there are definitely times where that overrides the 1st amendment. My point on mentioning the principle of the matter earlier was that some of the societal problems that people might be prone to try solving by limiting freedoms are likely to turn on their head at some point by factors outside of the law (like cultural or technological change), leaving the government with great temptation to use those powers in ways they were not intended.

It's kind of a mess now because it's so easy to put ones opinions out there for the whole world to see (and just as easy for those opinions to be misunderstood), I would bet too if corporations were treated legally less like "people" they wouldn't feel as much need to do image control based on what one employee says. With the Justine thing, was that an attempt at a joke? I read that and don't see racism, but instead a joke I don't quite get or that just wasn't funny. I would tend to think she shouldn't be fired for that, this internet viral stuff is nuts and we don't really understand what we're doing. "The medium is the message" and all that stuff.
Erik Sautter commented on Ambre Sautter's post.
I mentioned not knowing what it means on purpose to broadcast my honest lack of understanding, because apparently there's an "obvious" meaning to a good number of people. So, now what? What do I do, and how should others react to me? Should i go along with the mob? Should I speak up to defend someone being attacked (possibly in my ignorance), because though admittedly ignorant it can be hard to stand by and watch someone getting absolutely reamed (and isn't that the lesson "what would you do" teaches us anyway)? Do I just be quiet and scratch my head? Should I live in fear of the mob? Should others consider me "discredited" and "ignorant" in a broader sense because of this instance? ( I'm not over analyzing this exact situation for my own sake but thinking of the many many similar cases we come across every day now that social media is so prevalent)
Erik Sautter commented on Ambre Sautter's post.
On your other question my opinion is If they are employing people as a legal entity like a corporation the church needs to follow those laws, so they should be careful how they set themselves up. Beyond that it would also sort of depend on how ones beliefs affect their job duties, ie I could see a tougher standard for a pastor vs some other function, and the bible does prescribe ways to keep most instances like that from happening if followed. It's somewhat nuanced really and meant to be worked out in practice as a community with understanding and forgiveness. But that's my opinion

I'm imagining hacking it to add a slider switch to control the distance and/or time for each of the movement commands, hmmmmm....thanks for the share!

The only glitch is that I developed a superficial wound infection that took more than two weeks to clear up. The hospital’s statistics won’t reflect that, because it only became apparent after I left for home. " As a "straight out of Dilbert" software engineer that snippet in particular made me snicker.

It's not just the style but the substance behind it. Styles always come back but I fear we're losing some of the substance. This is a blurb from an article a few years back that's always stuck with me: "And there's something else, not only in Manhattan but throughout the country. A major reason people are blue about the future is not the stores, not the Treasury secretary, not everyone digging in. It is those things, but it's more than that, and deeper.
It's Sully and Suleman, the pilot and "Octomom," the two great stories that are twinned with the era. Sully, the airline captain who saved 155 lives by landing that plane just right—level wings, nose up, tail down, plant that baby, get everyone out, get them counted, and then, at night, wonder what you could have done better. You know the reaction of the people of our country to Chesley B. Sullenberger III: They shake their heads, and tears come to their eyes. He is cool, modest, competent, tough in the good way. He's the only one who doesn't applaud Sully. He was just doing his job.
This is why people are so moved: We're still making Sullys. We're still making those mythic Americans, those steely-eyed rocket men. Like Alan Shepard in the Mercury rocket: "Come on and light this candle."
But Sully, 58, Air Force Academy '73, was shaped and formed by the old America, and educated in an ethos in which a certain style of manhood—of personhood—was held high.
What we fear we're making more of these days is Nadya Suleman. The dizzy, selfish, self-dramatizing 33-year-old mother who had six small children and then a week ago eight more because, well, she always wanted a big family. "Suley" doubletalks with the best of them, she doubletalks with profound ease. She is like Blago without the charm. She had needs and took proactive steps to meet them, and those who don't approve are limited, which must be sad for them. She leaves anchorwomen slack-jawed: How do you rough up a woman who's still lactating? She seems aware of their predicament." http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB123447506782479249

I think it's important to look at trustworthiness of local government in this and not just whether people support libraries or not. If people don't trust that the government is going to do what they are advertising based on past history this is what happens when there is a vote. The first streets levy was broadly worded and I know many people felt it would be funneled into pet projects, and it failed. They tightened up the wording a bit and did it again and it passed the next time. I have no doubt we will be voting again soon on this and hopefully the issue of government trust and accountability can be better addressed for people so the library can have what it needs to run well.

We already have a flat tax that dings all workers ~15%, payroll tax, is Bernie Sanders proposing getting rid of that? I'm not sure if Carson's plan gets rid of payroll tax or not, but I think at least some republicans proposing flat income tax want to remove payroll tax, meaning for an individual's total taxation it would be about a wash for low income people. I like the jubilee idea but I have a feeling based on our current government culture that lenders would still be forced to lend as if there wasn't a jubilee, which would end kind of like the housing bubble.

Is there an official legal process for a candidate to resolve a question like eligibility, or is the state ballot process the "official" way? I don't imagine someone can just call up the Supreme Court when they want to run for president; but honestly the arguments about how the originalist interpretation he adheres to would make his eligibility not cut and dry at the very least calls his personal consistency into question when it's not the most expedient for him, even if the courts would rule him eligible.

I also think you can gain clues from what the document says about itself, for instance the preambles to the constitution and bill of rights, also the fact it set up an amendment process. And in the case of the Bible the "God-breathed" nature of scripture it claims about itself. That may not answer your thought exactly, but I think in particular the amendment process makes textualism a pretty reasonable way to look at it (abide by what it says, and if We the People agree it says the wrong thing, change it). Now on the other hand, look at the 7th amendment and the reference to $20 that has apparently not been followed for 2 centuries...so in practice it's all pretty messy...
Erik Sautter replied to Scott Happel's comment.
Im not claiming you have becessarily said this but it's often at least the implication that the success of those years was due to government's policies. I would unscientifically argue the success of those 40 years had to do with a combination of cultural factors first (getting through such a large undertaking as ww2 together as a nation and having feelings of goodwill toward one another in victory, regardless of gov. policies), and government policies having less to do with it. All to say I don't think we can impose the policies of 60 years ago America (or 60 years ago Europe, looking at you Bernie) on today and get the same results.
Erik Sautter replied to Scott Happel's comment.
But at the same time, inflation was pretty bad in the 1970s (oh no, stagflation!!!!) many unions were run by the mob, Nixon killed what was left of sound money... etc, etc. Many of these things were already on an unsustainable path by the time Reagan took office. I think the way certain things were handled like the farm crisis set up the current crony system, so I'm not really meaning to defend Reagan completely. But I think more liberty makes sense now because with a government already beholden to cronies, the answer doesn't seem to be giving it more power and more money to decide how to dole out. Starve the beast, starting with corporate welfare. And with the diversity of culture we have compared to decades ago, using policies that worked when a vast majority shared if not common values at least common goodwill may only pit us against one another further due to competing visions of how government should use that power. Imagine a Cruz or Trump administration using the powers a Sanders admin. would hope to implement...
Also, if the middle class has shrunk, it won't be as powerful a voting bloc so why would politicians be expected to actually look after them with their greater power? So I can't say whether liberty policies would economically help specifically the middle class or not, I think it could be argued multiple ways, I just see a host of other problems coming if we continue centralizing power in the federal executive branch.

Erik Sautter replied to Scott Happel's comment.
And that's basically what happened with the 80s farm crisis, farmers got stuck holding the bag and corporations were able to gain control from desperate farmers, who were in that situation because of decades of price fixing policies that incentivized unsustainable debt....I'm dizzy...ideally (at least in my mind) there wouldn't be enough power invested in the federal govt to make it worth the .1% trying to set up an effective oligarchy.

I think throwing the word "fundamentalist" in here might be useful in helping explain some of this disconnect, I know fundamentalist is a word reserved for demonization but im thinking of it in terms of its actual meaning. I wonder if many of the trump supporters come from a more "fundamentalist" background (thinking of his heavy support in the south) and are just lumped in with the media definition of evangelical. http://www.whatchristianswanttoknow.com/what-is-the-difference-between-fundamentalists-and-evangelicals/
Erik Sautter replied to Adam Omelianchuk's comment.
Personally I'm not that interested in what trump is saying right now, Iowa voted and I did my part, so i would rather not think about this stuff for a few months. I don't support trump but have tried to understand why people do, so I was hoping to share some of what I've turned up. If you interpreted what I wrote as trying to take down trump or his supporters, that's not what I meant to do at all. I think the term evangelical is useful in generally describing ones beliefs on a number of doctrines and how one tends to put those beliefs into action, and it seems to me like "evangelical" + "fundamentalist" = "media def. of evangelical"

For me having ad blockers is like the idea that the 2nd amendment is a deterrent to tyranny.
Erik Sautter replied to his own comment.
I think the ad network stuff that follows you from site to site and if they get a whiff that you're a 20-35 year old male all bets are off on how low the ad bar is set, that makes it all a bit more muddy. My real beef is with the ad network (probably a black box to site owners), not with the fact that sites have ads. Things can't be unseen. While I might have an inkling part of the Web social contract is viewing ads, it's rigged in the favor of ad networks shooting for the lowest common denominator right now because there isn't any sort of pre-consent to view ads from xyz network, for instance. As consumers I think using ad blockers is a way to get site owners' attention and they will hopefully dump ad networks that tend to be more low brow. I'm am more than happy to disable an ad blocker for a site such as Forbes that detects it and asks me to disable for their site with assurance they don't use abusive ad networks.
Erik Sautter replied to his own comment.
And more specifically on the "2nd amendment" reference, think of how abusive ad networks are now, there would be little hope of reform except if people outright abandoned the Web if ad blockers were no longer a "threat".

My question from this is whether there is "bad science" at play with stuff like this, or is the media purposely twisting things? The previous conclusion was reported widely with that wonderful "concerned" tone that shows a lack of respect, along with other studies showing "conservatives vote against their self interest", etc. It seems people working off these conclusions may actually bear them out in bad government actions. Could it be the MIT guy bragging about crafting the ACA to be deceptive because of the stupidity of the American voter (a conclusion based on studies like this?) was justified in his mind because "social science", for one example?

May be useful to point out "Christians of Facebook" and "2nd amendment 'mericans" are your "neighbors" too.
Erik Sautter replied to Matt Heerema's comment.
A couple things: the Islam/kaepernick thing was reported in a couple gossipy sites a month or so ago according to my research, before any of this happened. Why the criticism of the person who pointed this out in this post, which sort of morphed into a criticism of "Christians of facebook"? That was sort of the genesis of my previous comment, meant honestly as a reminder and not to undermine or dismiss you. It's been interesting the last couple years to hear of an event that raises controversy, not pay attention for a couple days, and then suddenly Christians are sniping at each other on social media over tangentially related things. It makes my heart ache because I rarely see it come to any positive resolution.
As for whether "Islam or not" is relevant in the kaepernick situation, it could at least provide an explanation since muslim sports figures in the past have had controversy over this same type of issue (Muhammed Abdul Rauf, Muhammed ali, maybe others) tracing back to their faith. It's a plausible explanation for part of the underlying motivation of kaepernick, whatever one thinks about it from there as to the validity. Personally, if it is influenced by a conversion to islam I would like to understand Islamic beliefs more on the issue because the first amendment is important.
I'm on mobile for now so I haven't watched the video, but I think that's really good and courageous to do that and stand against those who want chaos, I'm honestly impressed by the actions and example you have described.

Is it correct to summarize this finding as "attitude toward parenting matters most"?
"We found that the children of fathers whom we characterised as having a positive emotional response to parenting and a sense of security in their role as a parent and partner early in the child's life—corresponding to higher scores on factor 1 and factor 3, respectively—were less likely to exhibit behavioural problems at 9 and 11 years of age. These factors may reflect ways of behaving and interacting that are a marker of favourable parental characteristics and positive parenting in the longer term. Our analyses also show that the amount of paternal involvement with childcare and household tasks such as shopping, cleaning, cooking, and childcare activities was not associated with later child behavioural problems."

Some working definitions for uses of the word science that hopefully help:
science: actual study of stuff to determine what is true regardless of its consequences
"science": politicians and/or corporate interests wearing lab coats, picking and choosing facts to support their interests, and maybe choosing not to study things contrary to their conclusion
#science: groupthink requiring zero knowledge or curiosity about the natural world, approaching religious fervor

Those two survey questions are asking different things, since in the second one the wording seems to imply that at least persons B, and C are still living.
Erik Sautter replied to Rae Whitlock's comment.
Nope. The apparent premise of the survey comparison is to expose hypocrisy, which I’m saying is false equivalence. I think it’s valid that people would treat the question of living vs descendants differently even if only for practical reasons of implementation of such reparations (account for inflation? What percent descendant? Etc)
Erik Sautter replied to Rae Whitlock's comment.
Erik Sautter commented on Matt Heerema's post.
I think when it comes to tangible assets it’s easier to resolve the injustice by law without creating more injustice...as far as “intangible assets” individuals should be challenged to seek their conscience on that when there’s a fairly clear case...but if it was “legal” theft, even if immoral, I think it’s dangerous to force reparation by law to descendants because precedent is a big deal. I’m not putting these on the same level as slavery, but think of reparations for current consumer protection laws where the law of “buyer beware” was used to steal in the past.
Erik Sautter replied to his own comment.
“... precedent is a big deal. I’m not putting these on the same level as slavery, ...” ... more clear?
Erik Sautter replied to his own comment.
Yes. Not trying to equate them morally, but in both cases there was an immoral but legal theft (almost certainly of generational wealth in some cases even for buyer beware) that was later made illegal. It seems to me like this probably would increase the scope of what ex post facto laws are considered constitutional (https://scholarship.law.georgetown.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=2437&context=facpub), a precedent that could easily be exploited to create new injustice. I think it’s important for any solution to this issue to stop cycles of injustice and not open the door for perpetuating the cycle.

Wendy Riley to trial it, there is a guest privilege where you can pay cash if you are with a member friend.
For us the cost savings on organic stuff more than offsets the extra gas and time cost (they also have a member gas station at ours with discounted gas, hah)
it might be worth calculating for your needs and getting those line items adjusted for a net savings across the budget categories.
Membership is also a cost but at the high member level you get a check every year based on how much you spend, so if you continue it may only be a one time cost. Our next year of membership is more than paid for from that. That should probably concern me we spent that much, but, wooo free membership!
If you run those numbers you may find it could work in everyone’s favor.
For us the cost savings on organic stuff more than offsets the extra gas and time cost (they also have a member gas station at ours with discounted gas, hah)
it might be worth calculating for your needs and getting those line items adjusted for a net savings across the budget categories.

Jim Haworth I’m not sure if it’s the official “party” line but many who are libertarianish, including myself, follow Ron Paul’s views on abortion which are basically:
Every individual has basic rights, including a right to life. If someone doesn’t have a right to live, what good are any other rights after all?
It’s the government’s job to create laws to protect individual rights, in particular the rights of those who can’t protect their own.
An unborn baby is an individual with rights.
And then on capital punishment I’m not sure how much consensus there is but a possible justification for the government ending someone’s life is that they forfeited their rights by depriving someone else of theirs.

Definition of meme
1 : an idea, behavior, style, or usage that spreads from person to person within a culture
“Memes (discrete units of knowledge, gossip, jokes and so on) are to culture what genes are to life. Just as biological evolution is driven by the survival of the fittest genes in the gene pool, cultural evolution may be driven by the most successful memes.”

Property rights are human rights.
I think the right to own property and have well understood and enforced property laws is a human right that contributes hugely to a peaceful society. How many lives have been lost over the years from, essentially, fights over property? Wars, too.
If laws protecting property owners are abolished, it becomes either law of the jungle or communism.

Who is worthy to pay the cost of the former wickedness Ezekiel 18:27 tells us to turn away from?
Only God himself. Because he so loves us he sent his Son, conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of a woman, to pay the cost we cannot, no matter how righteous we act.
Belief and confession in Jesus’ identity as God, his atoning sacrifice, and resurrection seals us with the Holy Spirit, who works in us to bring about greater righteousness.

In 2019 over 2 million people in the US died. That’s more than a bunch of wars and stuff, maybe even more than all gun deaths! We need to put a stop to this!

The app and checkin requirements apply to those in quarantine.
Quarantine is determined by specific rules, including contact tracing, so the government decides who.
Logic conclusion upcoming….
The checkin app doesn’t apply to everyone at every moment, but could apply to anyone the government orders based on contact tracing.
“People” from the original link is not a gross exaggeration, the only limit in who it applies to is the government’s will. Pony up.

The translation and deeper study of the word translated “head” is important to combat what are essentially Roman cultural interpretations of it, but so is the surrounding scriptural context of the “therefore …” of why the topic is referenced in the first place. We shouldn’t go from one cultural error to another.
Why is headship referenced? Exact meaning of the word aside, are there other directives given based on it that that add de facto meaning to the word itself?

Not trying to be obtuse, just spark thinking….
Example of what I mean
In the book The Story About Ping, the last duck on the boat got spanked. The phrase “last duck on the boat” doesn’t literally mean “get spanked”, but if you’re living in that duck world, one logically follows from the other and could easily be conflated. When I heard that story it was abhorrent to me that a spanking would logically flow from being last on the boat, but that’s a question of who sets the standard and whether it is just, not of the logic of the standard
